In this article we will explain thoroughly everything you need to know about instagram post dimensions. Lest’s start from the top: Instagram is the one social network that favours square photos, or 1:1 ratio.
Does the user have to always share square photos on Instagram? It surely displays square photos better and its interface requires so. Every other photo which size and dimension is bigger than square will be cropped at first. The ideal square photos must have a size of 1080px by 1080px, but Instagram will display them as 600px by 600px.
There are many landscape photos that we’re used to see on Instagram as well. The recommended aspect ratio is 1.91:1, aka 1080 pixels x 566 pixels.
But, what about portrait photos? We love Unsplash and its endless range of amazing photos, some of which are vertical. Instagram post dimensions only allow a ratio of 4:5. If the photo is longer (or wider) it will be automatically cropped. If you want to crop, add text, filters, or others you can always use our in buld editor or Canva & Vista Create directly form the platform.
Also, the video ratios on Instagram must be 1:1 and their size 1080px by 1080px. The same things as per the photos will happen if a user wants to share a vertical video (ratio should be 4:5) and its size must be 1080px by 1350px).
Regular videos are shot vertically or horizontally. The vertical one can have a maximum aspect ratio of 9:16 and a minimum of 4:5.
While, the horizontal one can have a maximum ratio of 16:9 and a minimum of 5:4.
The recommended size for video covers photos is 420px by 654px (or 1:1.55 ratio), and you can’t edit it once you’ve uploaded and shared the video.
And finally but not less importantly, Reels! Reels should follow an aspect ratio of 9:16, aka 1080 pixels x 1920 pixels. You should keep in mind the same pixels when and if choosing a cover photo for the reel. Nevertheless, Instagram will add black borders to videos smaller than that.
On the other hand, in your profile, a reel will be cropped to a 1:1 image and a 4:5 image in the home feed.
